Candle care

Pure beeswax burns slowly, cleanly and with a warm light. A little care at the start keeps it that way to the end.

Trimming the cotton wick of a beeswax candle
  1. 01

    The first burn

Let a vessel or pillar burn until the melted wax reaches the edge, about one hour for every 2.5 cm of width. This sets its memory, so it never tunnels.

  2. 02

    Trim the wick

Before every light, trim the cotton wick to about 6 mm. A short wick gives a calm, bright flame and no soot.

  3. 03

Burn for up to four hours

Then let it rest and cool completely. Longer burns overheat the wick and shorten the candle's life.

  4. 04

    Away from draughts

Open windows, fans and doorways make the flame dance and the wax drip. Keep it on a level, heat-proof surface.

  5. 05

    Put it out gently

Use a snuffer, or dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it. Blowing it out scatters wax and smoke.

  6. 06

    Never leave a flame alone

Keep candles away from anything that can burn, and out of reach of children and pets.

About bloom

Over time, pure beeswax can grow a soft white haze on its surface, called bloom. It is a sign that the wax is pure: paraffin and blends never bloom. It does not change how the candle burns. To bring back the warm gold, rub it gently with a soft cloth or warm it for a moment with a hair dryer.

  • Vessels

Stop when about 1 cm of wax remains, so the glaze never gets too hot. Wash the empty vessel with warm water and use it for flowers or matches.

  • Pillars

Burn on a plate or holder. After a few burns, gently press the soft outer wall inwards while it is warm, so the pillar keeps burning evenly.

  • Tapers

Stand them straight and tight in a holder. A little wax wrapped round the base holds a loose taper firmly.
