Our beeswax

Pure beeswax, and nothing else.

Every Beezu candle is made from 100% European beeswax. No paraffin, no soy, no blends. This is where it comes from, and why we use nothing else.

Where it comes from

From small apiaries across Europe.

Our wax comes from small European apiaries, kept by beekeepers who place their hives in meadows, orchards and at the edge of woodland, and who know each colony by its season.

When the honey is harvested, the beekeeper slices the thin wax caps from the comb. That capping wax, the cleanest wax a hive makes, is what we buy. The bees keep the rest of their comb.

What it is

Wax the bees make, and only that.

Worker bees make beeswax from tiny flakes they secrete, and shape it into comb to store honey and raise their young. It is dense, it melts at a high temperature, and it burns bright and slowly, with almost no soot. Light it, and the room smells faintly of honey.

No paraffin
A by-product of petroleum refining, and what most candles are made of.
No soy or blends
Not even a little, to soften the wax or lower its price.
No dyes
The colour is the colour of the comb.
No synthetic fragrance
Our scented vessels use organic essential oils. Everything else smells only of honey.

Colour and bloom

No two batches are quite the same.

We don't bleach or dye our wax, so it keeps the colour of its season. Spring blossom gives a pale, almost lemon wax; late summer and heather a deep amber. Candles from different batches may differ a shade, and we like them that way.

What is bloom?

In time, a soft white film may form on a pure beeswax candle. This is bloom: natural oils in the wax rising to the surface. It is a sign that nothing was added. Wipe it away with a soft cloth, or leave it; it does not change the burn.

A note on scent

Honey first. Then, only plants.

Our pillars and tapers are unscented: they smell only of honeycomb. For our three stoneware vessels we add organic essential oils, never synthetic fragrance, in a measure light enough to let the beeswax through.
