Beeswax and a quieter bedroom

Why the hour before sleep is the best hour for a candle, and where to put it.

The hour before sleep is the one most of us spend under the brightest light: a ceiling lamp, a phone, a screen. Then we switch it all off at once and wonder why sleep is slow to come. A candle is a simple way to make that hour gentler.

Why a softer light helps

A candle flame is warm and dim, closer to a fire than to a lamp. Lighting one and turning the rest off lets the evening wind down on its own. We are not doctors and will not promise better sleep. We only know that a room lit by a flame feels slower.

It is also a signal. Lighting the same candle at the same time each night becomes a small cue: the day is done, and the rest can wait until morning.

Keep the other lights low too. A bedside lamp with a warm bulb, switched off once the candle is lit, is all a bedroom needs in the last hour of the day. Screens are the hard part: leaving the phone to charge in another room helps more than any candle can.

Light the same candle each night, and it becomes a cue that the day is done.

Where to put it

  • On a dresser or a shelf, rather than right beside the pillow.
  • On a level surface, well away from curtains, bedding and anything hanging above.
  • Within sight of where you sit or read, so it is never forgotten.

The Clay vessel is our usual choice for a bedroom. Its terracotta-sand glaze looks at home beside wood and linen, and its scent of fig leaf and cedar is green and soft rather than heavy. If you prefer no scent at all, a short pure pillar smells only of honeycomb.

Before you sleep

Put the candle out before you get into bed, never once you are drowsy. A snuffer is gentler than blowing: no smoke drifts across the room, and the wick is ready for tomorrow. Give it half an hour or so, read a few pages by its light, and then let the room go dark.

Beeswax burns with very little soot, so the walls of a small room stay clean, even with a candle lit most nights.
